Planning a birthday party for your child can be a lot of fun, but it can also be stressful. There are so many things to consider - what theme should you choose, who to invite, what food to serve, and the list goes on.
In this blog post, we will give you some tips and ideas that will help make planning your child's birthday party a breeze! We used to love to sit down with the kids and have them help us plan their party. It's their party and they likely know what they want so they are the perfect little helper!
The theme
The first thing you need to do when planning a birthday party for your child is to decide on the theme. This can be based on your child's favorite character, TV show, or movie. Once you have the theme chosen, the next step is to start planning the decorations.
You can usually find themed plates, cups, and napkins at your local party store. If you want to go the extra mile, you can even get a custom cake made with your child's favorite character on it!
Some children do not have a favorite character and may prefer to go with a color theme. Maybe even a sports theme. It's their day so let them pick the theme.
Location for the party
The next thing you need to think about is where you want to have the party. If you have a large enough space at home, that can be a great option. Otherwise, there are plenty of other places that can host a kids' birthday party - just be sure to call ahead and reserve a spot!
Some other things to keep in mind when choosing a location for the party are whether or not there is enough space for all of the guests, if there is an area where the kids can run around and play, and if there is parking available.
For us, we love having parties at the park. It does cost a small fee, but there is plenty of room for them to run and there is playground equipment they can play on.
Many restaurants, fast food places and entertainment places have reservations available for kid's parties. We have done parks, the bowling alley, McDonald's and our house. If your child's birthday is in the fall, going to a pumpkin patch can be fun too!
The invitations
Once you have the location chosen, it's time to start planning the guest list. This can be tricky, especially if your child has a lot of friends! A good rule of thumb is to invite one or two more kids than the age your child is turning. So, if your child is turning five, you would invite six or seven kids to their birthday party. Be sure to only invite people your child knows and likes. You don't want the birthday party to be overwhelming for your child or for you!
When it comes to sending out the invitations, you have a few options. You can hand-deliver them, mail them, or even send them electronically. If you choose to hand-deliver them, you can have your child help you put them together. This is a great way to get them excited about the party!
If you decide to mail the invitations, be sure to do so at least two weeks in advance. This will give the parents of the guests enough time to clear their schedules and make arrangements for childcare, if needed.
As for electronic invitations, there are a few different websites that offer free templates that you can use. Once you find one you like, simply fill in the information and send it out to your guests!
You will want to include all of the important information such as the date, time, and location of the party. It is also a good idea to include a RSVP date so that you can get an accurate head count for the party.
Do not forget the RSVP date! I didn't add one to my daughter's graduation party and almost nobody responded by a reasonable time. I had no idea how big of a cake I needed or how much food to cook.
The food
When planning the menu for your child's birthday party, it is important to choose foods that kids will like. You can never go wrong with pizza, chicken fingers, or a veggie tray. It is also a good idea to have some fruit and yogurt on hand for the kids who might not be as adventurous when it comes to trying new foods.
If you are having the party outside, you can always grill up some hamburgers and hot dogs. Anything from ranch pasta salad to sweet coleslaw goes well with grilled foods. Or have your child help you figure out the menu. Sit down and plan it out together!
There is a good chance they will know what many of their friends like.
Don't forget the birthday cake! This is usually the highlight of the party for kids. You can get a custom cake made, or you can pick one up from your local grocery store. Just make sure that you have enough for everyone at the party!
You will also need to decide if you are cooking outside or if you are going to be doing mostly indoor cooking. Be sure that you have the grill in a safe area away from playing children.
Games and activities
No party is complete without games and activities! These can be tailored to fit the theme of the party or they can be general birthday party games. Some popular games for kids' parties are musical chairs, Simon Says, Pin the Tail on the Donkey, and Hot Potato.
For a more low-key activity, you can set up a coloring station or have a movie playing in the background. Just make sure that you have enough activities to keep all of the kids entertained throughout the party!
You may also want to consider hiring a professional entertainer for the party. This is a great option if you want to take some of the pressure off of yourself. Professional entertainers can provide face painting, balloon animals, and magic shows.
The cleanup
Last but not least, don't forget about the cleanup! This is often the most dreaded part of planning a kids' birthday party. But, it doesn't have to be too bad. If you plan ahead and get organized, the cleanup will be a breeze.
Be sure to have plenty of garbage bags on hand for all of the trash that will be generated. You will also need some cleaning supplies to tidy up any spills or messes.
It is always a good idea to have someone else help you with the cleanup. This way, you can relax and enjoy the party too!
Conclusion
Planning a birthday party for kids can be a lot of fun! Just be sure to plan ahead, get organized, and have plenty of games and activities on hand. And don't forget the cleanup! With these tips in mind, you are sure to throw a party that your child will never forget.
When you plan it all out, it will be a lot less overwhelming for you and your child!
